Independent, Jewish & frankly feminist since 1976, Lilith’s mission is to be the feminist change-agent in and for the Jewish community: amplifying Jewish feminist voices, creating an inclusive and positive Judaism, spurring gender consciousness in the Jewish world and empowering women, girls and trans and nonbinary people of every background to envision and enact change in their own lives and the larger community.

About our name:
According to legend, Lilith was the first woman, created even before Eve. She told Adam, “We are equal because we are created from the same earth.” For more, check out “The Lilith Question” from our premier issue and this source sheet of biblical and rabbinic references to Lilith.

Editor in Chief
Susan Weidman Schneider, one of Lilith’s founding mothers, has been editor in chief since the magazine launched. Her writing about Jewish women’s philanthropy, the Jewish stake in abortion rights, the persistence of gender stereotyping and more have been credited with moving the needle on feminist change in the Jewish world.. She’s the author of Jewish and Female and Intermarriage, and co-author of Head and Heart, a book about money in the lives of women.
Fiction Editor
Yona Zeldis McDonough (aka Kitty Zeldis) is the award-winning author of the eight novels and over thirty books for children. She is also the editor of two essay collections, and her short fiction, essays and articles have appeared in numerous national and literary magazines. Photographer
Joan Roth has had her work featured in publications throughout the world and exhibited in major galleries everywhere. Author of Jewish Women: A World of Tradition and Change, as well as the first book with photographs of New York’s unhoused women.
Executive Editor
Sarah Seltzer manages Lilith’s digital presence and writes and edits for the magazine; her position is generously supported by The Malka Fund. The former editor of Kveller and Deputy Editor of Flavorwire, she is a widely published journalist, essayist, and book critic. She also writes fiction.
Communications, Events & Strategic Partnerships
Rebecca Katz is a Brooklyn-based cartoonist, creative facilitator, and educator. You can see her comics and illustrations on instagram (@katzcomics) and published in Lilith magazine.
Editorial Assistant
Arielle Silver-Willner is Lilith’s Editorial Assistant (and a former Lilith intern), as well as a frequent contributor to the Lilith blog and magazine. She also works part-time, very creatively, in childcare.
Poetry Editor
Poet and critic Alicia Ostriker has published 17 volumes of poetry. Her latest collection, The Volcano and After: Selected and New Poems, 2002-2019, came out in 2020. She has been called “America’s most fiercely honest poet,” and was one of the first poets in America to publish poems on motherhood.
Book Review Editor
Ilana Kurshan is the author of If All the Seas Were Ink, a memoir of Talmud study published by St. Martin’s Press. She works as a translator and editor in Jerusalem. ilana@lilith.org
Art Director
Lindsay Barnett has a degree in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she has worked as a designer for a variety of clients ranging from Coach, to the JDC, to the theater company Naked Angels.
Managing Editor Emerita
Naomi Danis, who retired from Lilith in 2020 after 32 years to devote herself to writing children’s books, compiled Lilith’s resource pages, originated the annual roundup of feminist books for young readers, translated work from Hebrew to English in Lilith and elsewhere. Her acclaimed children’s books include I Hate Everyone, While Grandpa Naps and My Best Friend, Sometimes.
